CEO Update

As the “champion of the business community”, the Chamber continues to connect and activate a diverse range of activities in our region. The trust we have gained to be the connector is proving popular to the opportunities ahead.

The announcement of the Bunbury Hospital Redevelopment is an amazing opportunity for jobs in our region, this was evident to the recent information session hosted by Perkins Builders & Multiplex, where 60 businesses were keen to learn about the process ahead.
Expressions of interest are open now for suppliers until 4th Nov: https://bunbury_hospital.icn.org.au/

In addition to this, we are staying informed about the proposed Offshore Wind project, particularly through updates from the government department DCCEEW. We encourage individuals to contact us if they would like further updates. Notably, the feasibility license applications for the project have been extended until December 3, 2024. Community feedback will be sought after all environmental and other approvals have been obtained. The Minister will consider all submissions to help inform his decision regarding the suitability of the proposed area for offshore wind development. As we look toward new industries, it is essential that skill requirements remain at the forefront of any workforce planning. I recently attended Clean Energy Skills Roadmap consultation with stakeholders in Collie. A coordinated approach is vital as we prepare to strengthen our regional position as a powerhouse. It will require concerted effort to work together, avoiding silos, and learning from countries that have successfully made transitions. The progress made thus far has been encouraging, particularly regarding opportunities to upskill our current workforce. Meeting the new General Manager of the Clean Energy Skills National Centre of Excellence, who will work alongside SR TAFE in our region, ensures we remain competitive and are not left behind.

The City of Bunbury's announcement regarding the cessation of their commercial bin services by June 2025 has raised concerns for many local business owners. Fortunately, our Chamber was able to provide City of Bunbury Waste Services a platform to host an information session for businesses to drop in & discuss the changes with the representatives. Corrie Nottle and her team effectively communicated the rationale behind this decision, providing attendees with essential information to make informed choices.

Small Business Day is celebrated each year on the 26 October, and last week we hosted a small morning tea to acknowledge and celebrate the small businesses in our community. Small businesses are the backbone of communities, fostering local economies, and creating jobs. Their dedication and resilience often go unnoticed; however, they play a crucial role in shaping our neighborhoods and supporting local culture.

According to the ABS, a small business entity is a business who has less than 20 employees. Here in the South West (as at 30 June 2023) we have over 16,000 small businesses registered while our Bunbury Geographe region has City of Bunbury at 2,849; Shire of Harvey at 1,638; Shire of Dardanup at 857 and Shire of Capel at 1,144.

Another successful year has wrapped for the South West Leaders, with this year’s cohort having 180 mentor and mentees join the program.  Applications will be open soon for the 2025 program with plans well underway for our July conference with a guest speaker list that is sure to excite the attendees. This opportunity is free to sign in to the program and an affordable cost throughout the year to attend events.

The Chamber remains deeply interested in opportunities for our region, and a prime example is our recent attendance at the Western Australian Innovators of the Year Awards in Perth. The finalists this year were exceptional, showcasing innovative solutions ranging from a 3D printing technique to bioengineer a heart valve, to a hydrogen co-fire system retrofitted to existing diesel engines, and even a plastic alternative made from farmed seaweed using a novel saltwater fermentation process. These are just a few of the twenty-six innovations presented. For those interested in seeing the complete list, please visit this link: https://bit.ly/3C85O6r

Advocacy WA and Volunteer South West partnered to deliver a workshop focused on enhancing Boards and Management Committees by including voices from individuals living with disabilities. Led by CEO Stu Schonell, this informative session prompted reflection on our disability awareness and offered a valuable opportunity to explore many pertinent areas for deeper understanding.

Last night we held our Annual General Meeting for the Bunbury Geographe CCI, where our members voted to adopt an updated constitution and our new Executive Committee was elected (pictured). We are looking forward to another year of growth and development with some new faces on our Executive.

Lastly, if you haven’t yet registered for the Innovative Industries of the Future Conference taking place next week, I encourage you to do so! This event promises to have something for everyone, addressing both global and local impacts as nations transition to a clean economy. Until next month,

Julie
